Don’t Worry, President Trump Knows He’s Lost

Based on his actions since November 3rd, we should feel assured that this will be over soon.

Before I got my first job, my dad gave me this advice: “If you want a job, act like you’re already on the payroll.”

This was advice that led me to get several promotions later in life. When I wanted a position, say as a manager, I helped out. I went above and beyond the outlined duties of my current position. I made myself indispensable until it was clear no one was a better fit for the job than me.

Trump isn’t acting like he’s already on the payroll. Instead, he’s been taking to Twitter.

But is he acting like a President? Is he acting like he’s going to live in the White House or that he’ll retain his POTUS title for another four years? No.

It’s clear President Trump knows he has lost, because he’s acting exactly like someone who knows their position is going to be terminated on January 20th.

Let’s say you work in advertising for a sporting goods company that is bought by another sporting goods company.

When the two companies merge, you learn that your position will be made redundant. Your boss lets you know that you have a month to close out your open projects and pass off the rest to someone else.

What would you do in the meantime?

Probably all of the following:

  • feel resentful,
  • complain,
  • search for other jobs,
  • use up your remaining PTO, and/or
  • waste company time on social media or Netflix.

It’s unlikely you’d do very little actual work.

Yeah, you’d knock out your open projects, but would you drum up new business? Pitch cool new ideas? Unlikely. You’d know you were on your way out, so you’d do the absolute bare minimum.

Between November 3rd and December 8th (at the time of this writing), President Trump has:

  • gone golfing 9 times (November 7th, 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd, 26th, 27th, and 28th),
  • had no public events scheduled on 18 days,
  • participated in National Veterans Day Observance (where he did not speak, but just laid a wreath),
  • given an update on Operation Warp Speed,
  • delivered remarks on delivering lower prescription drug prices for all Americans,
  • participated in a Virtual 2020 G20 Summit,
  • called in to an Arizona GOP meeting on the 2020 Election,
  • pardoned Michael Flynn,
  • presented the Medal of Freedom to Lou Holtz,
  • delivered remarks at a Victory Rally in Georgia,
  • signed H.R. 5901,
  • presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dan Gable.

Let’s break this down.

  • He golfed on 9 of the 35 days (26%).
  • He had no public events scheduled 18 of the 35 days (51%).
  • He made remarks from the White House 3 times.
  • He traveled to Arlington Cemetery and a rally in Georgia.
  • He participated in two virtual/call-in events.
  • He signed something.
  • He pardoned a guy.

I’d consider that the BARE minimum a President could do. Don’t you? Further, he complained and ranted multiple times a day on all of his social media platforms as well as on televised or phoned-in interviews.

If actions speak louder than words, then despite how much Trump has been arguing that he won the 2020 election and it was “rigged,” he certainly isn’t acting like he won. If he isn’t acting like it, then we know it’ll all be over soon.

That should provide us some comfort.
